Lesson : 1 What is kathak?

Kathak is one of the major forms of Indian classical dance. The origin of kathak is traditionally attributed to the travelling bards of ancient India known as "Kathakars" or storytellers. The term kathak is derived from a Sankrit word Katha means story and Kathaka means "he who tells a story". The kathakas takes the story from the epics and ancient mythology through dance, songs and music. Kathak evolved during the Bhakti movement, incorporating the childhood & stories of lord Krishna mainly.

Basically kathak started of as a folk dance form where kathak dancers moved from one village to another telling stories and passed the information from one society to another.

The style of kathak that we see today is not as it started. The philosophy, content, attire, instruments and even languages changed from time to time. This blog narrates how the temple dancing kathak is changed from ancient India to Mughalas, Britis and post independent India and how the Revolution of various gharanas are happened.

So. Particularly it is a very well known dance form of India and known for its very beautiful graces and postures.
